LAS VEGAS: THE HISTORY
THE OLD LAS VEGAS - "OLD DOWNTOWN"

In the early 1700s, Spanish traders were searching for a faster route to Los Angeles along the Spanish Trail. A young scout named Rafael Rivera veered off course in search of water and discovered an arid valley abundant in artesian spring water. The discovery shortened the Spanish Trail to Las Angeles and hastened the rush west for California gold. This valley was named Las Vegas meaning “The Meadows” in Spanish.
A group of 30 Mormon missionaries were assigned by Brigham Young to build a fort in the Las Vegas valley in 1855. The fort was the first non-Indian settlement in the region and is still located on the corner of Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd. North.

LAS VEGAS: THE HISTORY
FREMONT STREET

With completion of the railway between Southern California and Salt Lake City in 1905, the availability of water established Las Vegas as an ideal refueling and rest stop. On May 15, 1905, Las Vegas was founded as a city when 110 acres of land near the railroad station was auction off and 800 residents called Las Vegas “home.” Stimulated by legalized gambling in the 1930s and the construction of Hoover Dam, Las Vegas quickly blossomed from a dusty railroad town into the gambling mecca it is today.

LAS VEGAS: THE HISTORY
THE OLD FLAMINGO

During the 1940s the “Las Vegas Strip” came into being with the advent of the El Rancho Vegas (destroyed by fire in 1960), Bugsy Siegel’s desert dream, the Flamingo Hotel, the Sands Hotel, and the Club Bingo (later the Sahara). During the 1960s, a phenomenon lead by Howard Hughes occurred in Las Vegas. Corporations began buying and/or building hotel/ casino properties unlike no others in the world. Gambling became “gaming” and was starting the transition to legitimate business.
Starting in the mid 1980’s, a period of unprecedented growth began which continues to this date. Population figures are estimated at 2 million people by the end of 2005. Las Vegas is the largest metropolitan city in the U.S. that was founded in the 20th century and is the number one tourist destination in the United States. Away from the glitter of the world famous “Strip” and casinos, Las Vegas is like any other major American city. Take a look………..
